Adding metadata to file field entries

If you need to add metadata to file field entries (such as audio or video metadata) on your Drupal website, use one of the following procedures to enable this feature, depending on your installed version of Drupal.

Drupal 7

Drupal 7 uses the getID3() module to incorporate this functionality into websites. To install and enable this module and its associated library:

  1. Download and install the getID3() module from drupal.org. For information about how to install a module, see Installing modules and themes on drupal.org.
  2. Download the latest stable version archive of the getID3() code library.
  3. Unzip the getID3() library archive and place its files in the getid3 module directory on your server. In most cases, place the files in the /sites/all/libraries/getid3/getID3 directory.
  4. Go to the Modules page, and then select the GetID3 check box.
  5. Click Save configuration.

Drupal 6

Although Drupal 6 uses the FileField_meta module (distributed with the FieldField module) to enable this feature, it also depends on the getID3() module and its code library to handle file field metadata.

Follow these steps to activate the FileField_meta module, which is intended to display metadata about files attached to nodes with the FileField module:

  1. Sign in to your website as an administrator, and then go to the Modules page at Administer > Site Building > Modules (site path).
  2. Ensure that the following modules are installed:
    1. Content Construction Kit (CCK)
    2. FileField

If either module isn't listed in this order, download, install, and enable the modules that you need from drupal.org. For information about how to install a module, see Installing modules and themes on drupal.org.

Be sure to click Save configuration after you enable each module.

  3. On the Modules page, select the Content check box, and then click Save configuration at the bottom of the page.
  4. Add a CCK field of the type "File" to any content-type on its Manage fields page at Administer > Content management > Content types ("manage fields" link) (http://[site_URL]/admin/content/node-type/[content_type]/fields).

Add names of your choice, select the data type file and the file element that is appropriate to your needs.

  5. Click Save, select the options needed for your site on the following configuration page, and then click Save field settings.
  6. Download and install the getID3() module from drupal.org.
  7. Download the latest stable version archive of the getID3() code library.
  8. Unzip the getID3() library archive and place its files in the getid3 module directory on your server. In most cases, place the files in the /sites/all/libraries/getid3/getID3 directory.
  9. On the Modules page, select the check boxes for the following modules:
    • GetID3
    • Filefield_meta
  10. Click Save configuration.
