About Acquia Cloud billing

Billing for Acquia Cloud standard consists of two components: an Acquia Network subscription and usage-based resource pricing.

Note: This page describes Acquia Cloud standard billing and US pricing. For information about Acquia Cloud Enterprise billing or for pricing in other regions, contact your Acquia Account Manager or salesperson.

Acquia Network subscription

An Acquia Network subscription gives you access to a suite of services, information, and support for your Drupal 6 and Drupal 7 websites. Acquia Cloud standard requires a Developer or Professional Acquia Network subscription. Your Acquia Network subscription is charged either monthly or yearly. See Cloud pricing for details on the different subscription types and prices.

See the Purchasing FAQ for answers to common questions regarding the Acquia Network purchase process.

Usage-based resource pricing

Acquia Cloud standard servers, disk storage, and network data transfer (bandwidth) are billed based on actual usage. Server usage and disk storage are measured on an hourly basis, while data transfer is measured on a monthly basis. All usage-based charges are billed on a monthly basis, even if you have a yearly Acquia Network subscription. You aren't billed for shared resources, such as shared servers.

Measuring server size monthly means that if you have a server at its normal size running for a month, you will be charged the hourly rate for that size for each hour in that month. If you increase the server's size for one day, you will pay the higher hourly rate only for those hours when it was running at the larger size.

The hourly charges for servers are as follows:

EC2 name Size Per hour Per month
m1.small 1 ECU, 1.7GB RAM $0.087 $63.68
m1.medium 2 ECUs, 3.75GB RAM $0.223 $163
c1.medium 5 ECUs, 1.7GB RAM $0.222 $162.17
m1.large 4 ECUs, 7.5GB RAM $0.444 $324.33
m2.xlarge 6.5 ECUs, 17.1GB RAM $0.65 $474.81
m1.xlarge 8 ECUs, 15GB RAM $0.888 $648.67
c1.xlarge 20 ECUs, 7GB RAM $0.888 $648.67
m2.2xlarge 13 ECUs, 34.2GB RAM $1.30 $949.62
m2.4xlarge 26 ECUs, 68.4GB RAM $2.60 $1899.25

Disk storage

Disk storage costs $0.24/GB per month. This price includes additional storage space for backups. If you purchase "10GB" of storage for $2.40/month, Acquia provides 10GB for your primary storage plus an additional 10GB of backup storage directly on your server. Acquia also makes frequent point-in-time snapshots of your disk and retains them for three months. These snapshots are for disaster recovery only (for example, in case the disk drives fail, the datacenter burns down, etc.) and are included in the $0.24/GB storage cost.

Data transfer

All Acquia Cloud standard subscriptions include 50GB of data transfer per month. This included transfer limit is per subscription, not per server or per site; if you have three Acquia Cloud servers running seven different sites, you still have 50GB of included data transfer in total. Additional data transfer is $0.20/GB.

SSL support

SSL support costs $30 per month. This does not include the cost of your SSL certificate. You purchase your own SSL certificate from a certificate vendor and upload it to Acquia Cloud. For more information, see Adding HTTPS (SSL) support to your website.

Permanent IP addresses for web servers

Every Acquia Cloud site has a permanent IP address for its load balancers, but not for the web server behind the load balancers. Some users need permanent IP addresses for the web server (for example, so that outbound requests from the web can be identified appropriately by a firewall). If you need a permanent IP address for your web server, there is an additional charge of $5 per month.

Invoices

All charges for a month appear on your credit card as a single transaction around the 10th day of each month. To see invoices for a subscription, you must be the primary contact for that subscription. If you need to change the primary contact, open a ticket with Acquia Support. For more information, see Contacts in Managing your subscription. To view detailed invoices:

  1. Click your name or picture in the upper-right corner of the Network user interface, and select View profile (or go directly to accounts.acquia.com).
  2. Click Invoices.
  3. Click Download to download an invoice.

Example: Acquia Cloud billing, monthly subscription

Suppose that on May 20th you sign up for a monthly Acquia Network Developer subscription at $99/month, a 4 ECU server at $0.444/hour, and 10GB of storage at $2.40/month. On June 1, you will be charged (prices are approximate) the following:

  • $33 for the Developer subscription for 10 days of May
  • $99 for the Developer subscription for June
  • $106.56 ($0.444/hour * 240 hours) for the server
  • $0.80 ($2.40/month * 1/3 of May) for the 10GB of storage

Your server then runs for the entire month of June. However, you expect a large traffic spike on June 17 so you increase the server to 8 ECUs at $0.888/hour for 24 hours. On July 1, you will be charged (prices are approximate) the following:

  • $99 for the Developer subscription for July
  • $309 ($0.444/hour * 24 hours * 29 days) for the 4 ECU server for 29 days
  • $10.66 ($0.888/hour * 24 hours) for the 8 ECU server for one day
  • $2.40 for the 10GB of storage

Example: Acquia Cloud billing, yearly subscription

Yearly subscriptions are billed exactly like monthly subscriptions with one difference. With a monthly subscription, the Acquia Network subscription price (for example, $99/month for Developer) is always charged on the 1st of the month (the partial first month is prorated at the start of the second month). With a yearly subscription, your Acquia Network subscription price (for example, $995/year for Developer) is charged on the day you signed up, and on every yearly anniversary of that date until you cancel. However, usage charges for servers, storage, and bandwidth are always billed monthly, even if you have a yearly Acquia Network subscription; Acquia has to bill usage charges monthly to allow you to change your server and storage sizes throughout the year.

Suppose that on May 20th you sign up for a yearly Acquia Network Developer subscription at $995/year, a 4 ECU server at $0.444/hour, and 10GB of storage at $2.40/month. On May 20, you will be charged $995 for the first year of the Acquia Network subscription. On June 1, you will be charged (prices are approximate) the following:

  • $106.56 ($0.444/hour * 240 hours) for the server
  • $0.80 ($2.40/month * 1/3 of May) for the 10GB of storage

Your server then runs for the entire month of June. However, you expect a large traffic spike on June 17 so you increase the server to 8 ECUs at $0.888/hour for 24 hours. On July 1, you will be charged (prices are approximate) the following:

  • $309 ($0.444/hour * 24 hours * 29 days) for the 4 ECU server for 29 days
  • $10.66 ($0.888/hour * 24 hours) for the 8 ECU server for one day
  • $2.40 for the 10GB of storage

On May 20th of the following year, you will be charged $995 for your second year of the Acquia Network subscription.

Cancellation

You can cancel your Acquia Cloud standard subscription at any time.

Note: Once you cancel your subscription, you will no longer be able to access your website or its files. Download a backup of your site, any log files, or anything else on your server that you want to keep before you cancel.

To cancel your account:

  1. Log in to the Acquia Network, and click the Subscriptions tab.
  2. On the Subscriptions > Overview page, in the Subscription section, click the arrow on the Edit button and select Cancel.
  3. On the confirmation page, enter your Acquia Network password.
  4. Help us improve Acquia Cloud by telling us why you are cancelling.
  5. Click Finalize.

Self-cancellation is available only to customers who pay with a credit card. Other customers who pay with a purchase order or under a contract must contact their Acquia account manager to cancel their subscriptions. Acquia Cloud Free subscriptions cannot be cancelled.

Effects of cancellation

Cancellation affects your Acquia Network subscription and usage-based resource charges differently.

  • Your Acquia Network subscription will be canceled within a few minutes of your request. You will be billed for the prorated portion of the final billing period (monthly or yearly) in which your subscription was active. You will not be billed for additional periods for your subscription after the effective date of cancellation. Note that if you cancel a monthly subscription before the end of the first month of service, you will still be billed for the partial first month of service on the first day of the following month.
  • Your server will be terminated immediately, and all websites on it will no longer be available. At the beginning of the following month, you will be billed for the usage-based charges for however long your server was running.

When you cancel an Acquia Cloud subscription, Acquia may retain a copy of your data for a few extra days in case you change your mind. If you request that Acquia restore your subscription, and if Acquia still has your data available, it will charge a one-time $100 un-cancellation fee.

The Fine Print

The prices on this page are accurate as of July 2011 but are subject to change. See the Acquia Cloud pricing page for current prices.

All Acquia Cloud standard subscriptions require a credit card as part of the sign-up process, even if you use a coupon code for the purchase and will not be paying a balance. Knowing the identity of the buyer and having a valid credit card helps prevent fraudulent or abusive use of Acquia Cloud , such as sending spam and hosting malware.

Coupon codes grant a service credit to your account that is applied against all charges; for example, a "one month free" coupon for a Developer subscription grants a $165 credit, which is the price for one month of a Developer subscription plus one month of a 1 ECU server with 10GB of RAM. Your credit card will not be charged until you spend the credit. The amount of credit is based on a specific server size. Because you can change the size of your server on demand, the time it takes to completely use your credit can vary; for example, a larger server costs more and will use up the the coupon's value more quickly.
