Installing Acquia Developer Studio

Use the information on this page to help you to install Acquia Developer Studio on your computer or in your development environment.

Requirements

Before you install Acquia Developer Studio, ensure that you have the following items installed on your computer or available to you:

Use the following criteria when evaluating which development framework to use:

  • Container-based (Docker)
  • Less mature than Drupal VM
  • Must first be installed as a system process
  • Not as resource intensive as Drupal VM, which can affect boot times
  • Virtual machine-based
  • More mature than Lando
  • Installed on a per-project basis
  • Requires more resources than Lando, affecting boot times
  • Requires Virtualbox and Vagrant

After you install all required software, be sure to restart your terminal.

Acquia Developer Studio limitations

Acquia Developer Studio has the following limitations:

  • The Acquia Developer Studio command-line interface (CLI) supports only development with Drupal 8.
  • Acquia Developer Studio CLI commands are compatible only with Acquia Cloud, and are not compatible with Acquia Cloud Site Factory.
  • Acquia Developer Studio CLI requires and uses Acquia BLT.

Installing Acquia Developer Studio

After confirming that you meet the previously listed requirements use the following procedures to install Acquia Developer Studio, depending on your installed operating system:

To install Acquia Developer Studio CLI, complete the following steps:

  1. Open a command-prompt window on your local computer.

  2. If you haven’t already added an SSH key to your Acquia profile, complete the following steps:

    1. Run the following command to configure the connection to the Acquia Cloud API:

      ads api:setup
      
    2. Run the following command to create an SSH key:

      ads ssh-key:create
      
  3. Run the following command:

    curl https://s3.amazonaws.com/acquia-ads-cli/install-standalone.sh | bash
    
  4. Enter the information for sudo access to install Acquia Developer Studio to /usr/local/bin.

To install Acquia Developer Studio CLI, complete the following steps:

  1. Open a command-prompt window on your local computer.

  2. If you haven’t already added an SSH key to your Acquia profile, complete the following steps:

    1. Run the following command to configure the connection to the Acquia Cloud API:

      ads api:setup
      
    2. Run the following command to create an SSH key:

      ads ssh-key:create
      
  3. Download and run the Acquia Developer Studio CLI installation file.

Updating Acquia Developer Studio

To update Acquia Developer Studio CLI after you have installed the application, run the following command from a command prompt window:

ads update
