Setting up a domain for Acquia Cloud Edge

To route your website’s traffic through Acquia Cloud Edge, you must configure your domain name settings to either use Acquia Cloud Edge as the authoritative domain name server (DNS) for your domain, or add a CNAME for your domain to Acquia Cloud Edge.

Adding Acquia Cloud Edge as your authoritative DNS

To configure Acquia Cloud Edge as the authoritative domain name server for your website, complete the following steps:

  1. Sign in to Acquia Cloud Edge.

  2. In your Acquia Cloud Edge dashboard, click Overview, and then identify your nameservers.

  3. Determine the registrar for your website’s domain name, and then sign in to your domain name registrar’s website.

    Note

Domain registrar information is publicly available online from the WHOIS database. If you are unsure of your domain registrar, use a website such as whois.net to identify your domain name registrar.

  4. On your registrar’s website, update your nameserver records with the nameserver information that you obtained from Acquia Cloud Edge. If you are unsure about how to update your nameserver information with your registrar, contact your registrar’s support for assistance.

  5. In your Acquia Cloud Edge dashboard, confirm that your changes have taken effect by reviewing the displayed status message from the following list:

    • Status: Active – Your domain setup is complete.
    • Status: Pending – Your nameserver updates have not yet propagated, or were not updated correctly.

If your nameserver updates are marked Pending, click Overview in the Acquia Cloud Edge dashboard, and then click Recheck Nameservers, as in the following example:

How to force Acquia Cloud Edge to recheck your nameservers

If the issue persists, use a website such as whois.net to verify that your nameserver records match the records provided in Acquia Cloud Edge.

Adding a CNAME for a domain to Acquia Cloud Edge

With a CNAME setup, the authoritative DNS for your domain is not managed in Acquia Cloud Edge, and one or more subdomains are redirected to Acquia Cloud Edge using CNAME DNS record(s).

For information about limitations of this approach, see Limitations of CNAME setup on Acquia Cloud Edge.

Note

Do not perform these steps if you are using Acquia Cloud Edge as your authoritative DNS provider.

To CNAME a domain to Acquia Cloud Edge, complete the following steps:

  1. Sign in to your domain name service provider.

  2. Add a TXT record to your authoritative DNS on the root domain’s record, with a subdomain host cloudflare-verify.[example].com, replacing [example]. Acquia Cloud Edge will verify the presence of the TXT record.

The TXT record value will be a number, such as 888877777-3335555.

    Note

This TXT record should always remain in place while your domain is available through Acquia Cloud Edge.

  3. After Acquia Cloud Edge verifies the TXT record, update your DNS records, Page Rules, SSL, and caching settings as desired for the domain records.

  4. Test your configuration as described in Testing Acquia Cloud Edge.

  5. Add the CNAME for your desired domain to your authoritative DNS provider. Your CNAME domain name will be in the following format:

where [www.example.com] is the full name of the destination hostname. The format of the full CNAME record must match the following example:

    www.example.com CNAME www.example.com.cdn.cloudflare.net

Although you can add multiple CNAME records to your authoritative DNS, each CNAME record you add must contain a corresponding record in the Acquia Cloud Edge DNS tab Settings that is enabled. Enabled records are indicated by an orange cloud icon.

Limitations of CNAME setup on Acquia Cloud Edge

Domains that use the CNAME setup for Acquia Cloud Edge have the following limitations:

  • Distributed denial of service (DDoS) protection for attacks against DNS infrastructure is available only for the domain records that you delegate to Acquia Cloud Edge.
  • Security and acceleration benefits are available only for the subdomain records (such as www.example.com) you delegate to Acquia Cloud Edge. Bare, or root, domains (such as example.com) cannot be protected or accelerated using Acquia Cloud Edge due to DNS RFCs.

To send traffic for your bare domain to Acquia Cloud Edge, add a redirect on your webserver using a .htaccess file to forward traffic to the subdomains you have proxied through Acquia Cloud Edge.
