Segment text messages can be used to send text and multimedia messages to contact segments.

Creating segment text messages
------------------------------

1. Log in to Campaign Studio.
2. Click **Channels** > **Text Messages**.
3. On the **Text Messages** page, click **+New**.

The system displays the **What type of sms do you want to create?** dialog box.

4. On the New Segment Text Message tile, Click **Select**.

Campaign Studio displays the New Segment Text Message page.

5. In **Internal Name**, specify the name that you want to display in your text messages list.

Acquia recommends having a naming convention for different types of text messages that you may send. A naming convention helps you to keep your list organized and also helps team members to easily find text messages.

6. In **Text Message**, create the text message content.

In the body of text messages, Campaign Studio supports global tokens and other tokens such as `{contactfield=firstname}`.

    Note

One text message has a maximum limit of 160 characters. If your message exceeds this limit, your SMS router might charge you for two or more messages.

7. **Categories**: (_Optional_) Group various resource types to different organizational classifications such as marketing strategies, topics, or departments. For more information, visit [Categories](https://docs.acquia.com/campaign-studio/settings/categories).
8. **Projects**: (_Optional_) Group and manage all related entities within a dedicated, centralized workspace. For more information, visit [Projects](https://docs.acquia.com/campaign-studio/projects).
9. In **Language**, select the language for the text message.

This helps you to select the appropriate message in a campaign.

10. In **Published**, set this toggle bar to **Yes** to publish the message.
11. In **Contact segment**, select the segment or segments that you want to use to send the segment text message.
12. In **Publish at (date/time), g**et the date and time when you want to publish the template text message.

To schedule a template text message to publish at a specified date and time:

     1. Click the **Publish at (date/time)** box and select your preferred date and time from the Date and Time picker.
     2. Set **Published** to **Yes**.

Campaign Studio marks the template text message as **Pending** and publishes it at the scheduled date and time.

13. In **Unpublish at (date/time),** set the date and time you want a template text message to unpublish.

To schedule a published template text message to unpublish at a specified date and time:

     1. Click the **Unpublish at (date/time)** box and select your preferred date and time from the Date and Time picker.

Campaign Studio unpublishes the template text message at the scheduled date and time

Important

The Date and Time picker shows the date and time according to the default timezone set for your user’s profile in [System Settings](https://docs.acquia.com/campaign-studio/settings/configurations). Therefore, before you schedule an email to publish or unpublish, you must check the default timezone.

13. To create a multimedia message:
14. Set the **Is MMS** toggle bar to **Yes**.

The New Template Text Message page displays the **Media** section.

15. Do one of the following:
     1. To add media content from your local machine, click **Upload** and upload the media file.
     2. To add media content from a url, enter the URL in **Type media url here**.
16. Click **Save & Close**.

Note

* Twilio supports sending multimedia messages only to US and Canada phone numbers.
* Supported media types include .gif, .png, .jpg, and .jpeg.
* A maximum of 10 images can be included in one multimedia message.
* The total size limit for the media file is 5 MB.
* Campaign Studio does not validate external links.

Sending segment text messages
------------------------------

To send a segment text message to a segment or segment of contacts, do the following:

1. Create a segment text message.
2. Navigate to the Text Messages list page by clicking **Channels** > **Text Messages**.
3. Locate the segment text message that you want to send and click the arrow icon to open the drop down menu.
4. Click **Send**.

The system displays the **Schedule** dialog box.

    1. For **Schedule to start sending at**, select the date and time you want to schedule the segment text message to send.
    2. (Optional):
        1. Select the **Batch send** checkbox to send the text message in batches over a period of time.
        2. In the **\#** field, enter the number of contacts in each batch.
        3. Choose when to send the segment text message to the batch of contacts: per hour, per day, or per week.
5. Click **Schedule**.
Campaign Studio sends the segment text message at the scheduled date and time.

After the segment text message is sent, Campaign Studio does not automatically send it to new contacts thats are added to the segment. Contacts added to the segment after the segment text message has sent receive a Pending status. To send the segment text message to the new contacts in the segment, you must reschedule the message to send again. Campaign Studio sends the rescheduled segment text message only to the new contacts. Contacts can only receive a segment text message once.
