Migrating from Drupal 6.x to Acquia Drupal

This chapter covers migrating an existing Drupal 6.x site to Acquia Drupal.

Acquia Drupal SVN repository - If you want the easiest and most reliable site maintenance possible (and to avoid most of the following "manual" update procedure), you should update to the version of Acquia Drupal in Acquia's SVN repository on your local machine or remote server. Alternate instructions are included in the D6.x to Acquia Drupal: Advanced Migration with the Command Line - SVN Repository section of this guide. Note that SVN maintenance is only possible from the command line, not using GUI + FTP tools.

More information on using the Acquia Drupal SVN repository can be found in the Advanced Installation using the SVN Repository section of this guide.

See the Getting Started Guide introduction for links to other installation scenarios.

Read Before Updating

Read these instructions carefully before attempting to convert an existing Drupal 6.x site to the latest version of Acquia Drupal.

Avoid code conflicts - The update procedure described here is designed to avoid code version conflicts during update or migration. In it, you will leave a copy of your entire site intact on your server, as is (as a backup), and copy only site configuration and data files into a new Acquia Drupal code base.

Keep backups - It is essential to keep a backup of all old site code until you are certain the new, updated version of your site is functioning perfectly. Keeping the older code base gives you a fallback position if you encounter any unexpected problems with the newer version.
