Installing a Drupal distribution

You can install a Drupal distribution (or Drupal core) using the Acquia Cloud interface. A Drupal distribution is a custom edition of Drupal, tuned and extended with custom developed and contributed modules to enable desired features, such as Acquia Drupal or Drupal Commons. The Cloud > Workflow page gives you the ability to install many of the best and most popular Drupal distributions with just a few clicks. For a list, see Choosing a Drupal distribution.

To install a new Drupal distribution:

  1. On the Sites menu, click your new site.

  2. Open the Workflow page at Cloud > Workflow.

  3. Open the menu for the environment that will contain the new installation, and click Install Drupal.

Note: If you cannot select Install Drupal from the menu, ensure that the Code entity in the environment has a branch or trunk selected. You can't install to a tag.

  4. Select a Drupal distribution. For many distributions, you can click Learn more to get more information about a distribution. If you're not sure which Drupal distribution to use for your website:

    • For Drupal 7, click the Lightning distribution.
    • For Drupal 6, click the Acquia Drupal 6 distribution.

Make sure your PHP version meets the minimum requirement for your Drupal distribution. PHP 5.6 is recommended, and PHP 5.5 or later is required for Drupal 8. See Configuring PHP Settings for more information about setting your PHP version.

  5. If you want to install a distribution that's not listed (for example, your organization might have its own Drupal distributions, or you might want to install another distribution from drupal.org), in the text field at the bottom of the page, you can enter a URL that must be either:

    • The URL of the distribution's download file (which must be in .tar.gz format), or
    • The URL of the distribution's Drush .make file.

  6. Select the check box to accept the overwrite warning message, and then click Finish.

  7. Deploying a new site takes a few minutes. Once the Install Drupal page reports that it is done, you can choose to click:

    • Set up my site, to visit your Drupal website and run install.php to complete the Drupal installation. The Drupal install.php script opens in a new browser window. It creates a standard Drupal database, sets up the administrator username and password, and configures additional modules and features relevant to the Drupal distribution you chose.
    • Manage my code, to view the Cloud > Workflow page for your site.

As an alternative, you can click I don't want to wait and go immediately to the Cloud > Workflow page while your site installs. You can check the progress of the installation in the Task log section of the Workflow page. When the installation task is marked done with a green check mark, move on to the next step.
