Adding media to content

Site visitors with the appropriate permissions can create content on Drupal Commons websites. Created content can also include media files (such as images or videos), which can either be directly uploaded to the website from site visitors' computers or can be linked to and used from other external websites.

If the content type includes a media field, you'll see an option to add a media file resource similar to the following:

Media section

To add a media item to a content node:

  1. As you're creating or editing a content node, find the Media section, and then click Browse.

    The Media browser window appears.

    Media library window

  2. Determine the location of the media that you want to use with the content node, and click its appropriate tab:
    • Upload - The file resource is located on your local computer.
    • Web - The file resource is hosted on another website.
  3. If you clicked the Upload tab, complete the following steps:
    1. Choose the file that you want to upload.

After you choose the file, the file is immediately uploaded to the website.

    2. Click Next.
    3. Enter any required alt or title text for the file resource. You can also add a URL redirect to the image in the URL redirects section to make it easier to directly access.
    4. Click Save.
  4. If you clicked the Web tab, complete the following steps:
    1. In the File URL or media resource field, enter the URL for the web resource.

You can enter either the URL of a remote file (generally an image) or the URL of a web resource that is a known oEmbed provider (such as YouTube, Vimeo, or Flickr).

    2. Click Submit.

If you entered the URL for a remote file, Drupal Commons downloads the file and stores it on your website. Embedded resources (such as YouTube videos) are stored as a link to the original resource.

The content node that you're creating or editing now contains a thumbnail of the media that you've added. If you want to remove the media from the content node, click Remove for the media item that you want to delete.

To add an additional media item to the content node, click Browse and repeat the process.
