Application categorization

A category provides a way to group applications, which would tend to have consistent size and hosting requirements. Application categorization based on common attributes sets a particular application apart from others.

Use the following table to determine the category:

Category

Qualifying attributes

Marketing

  • Centrally managed

  • Fast time to market

  • Templated sites

  • Standardized features and functionality

Portal

  • Login required

  • Core centrally managed and site-specific features decentralized

  • Almost all authenticated traffic

  • Harder to cache by CDN or Varnish

Evergreen

  • Applications or brands that are not going anywhere

  • Ongoing feature enhancements (Managed by the central team)

  • Mostly anonymous users

B2B

  • More static in nature

  • Core Centrally Managed; Site specific features decentralized

  • Some sites may require login or email registration.

Intranet

  • Gated from public access / unavailable to public internet

  • Core centrally managed and site-specific features decentralized

  • Almost all authenticated traffic

  • Harder to cache by CDN or Varnish

  • Made for internal audience

Event site

  • High bursts of traffic

  • Authenticated and anonymous traffic

  • Authenticated during peak events
