Acquia DAM includes an AI-powered document summarization feature on Asset Digest. This feature generates a concise English-language summary of a document to help you understand its content without reading the full file.

Document summarization supports the following file types:

• PDF
• DOC
• DOCX

An administrator must enable this feature before any user can access it.

Enable AI document summaries

Before users can access document summarization, an administrator must enable it for the organization.

1. In DAM Admin, navigate to the settings area and locate the AI Document Summaries feature switch.
2. Toggle the feature switch to the enabled position.

The feature switch defaults to disabled. Organizations must opt in to enable it.

When the feature switch is off, the Summary tab is completely hidden for all users across the entire organization, regardless of their permission level or whether or not a summary already exists for an asset.

When the feature switch is on, the Summary tab and Summarize with AI button become available according to the permission and file type rules described in the following sections.

Summary tab visibility and permissions

The Summary tab is only available on document assets: PDF, DOC, and DOCX files. It does not appear for images, videos, or other non-document asset types.

Visibility depends on whether or not a summary has already been generated for the current asset version:

• No summary exists for the current version: Only users with the Edit Assets' Metadata, Type, and Preview permission can see the Summary tab. Those users see the Summarize with AI button.
• A summary exists for the current version: The Summary tab becomes visible to all users who have permission to view the asset, regardless of edit metadata permissions.

Users without the required permission who view an asset with no summary do not see the Summary tab at all.

Generate a summary

To generate a summary for a supported document asset:

1. Navigate to the document asset in Asset Digest.
2. Select the Summary tab in the Info panel.
3. Click Summarize with AI.
4. Wait for the system to process the document. A loading state displays while the summary generates.

When generation completes successfully, the summary displays as read-only text on the Summary tab.

The following rules apply to generated summaries:

• Summaries are always generated in English, regardless of the language of the source document.
• A summary cannot be edited, deleted, or regenerated for the same asset version. Once a summary exists, it is permanent for that version.

Handle summarization errors

If summarization fails or times out, an error message displays on the Summary tab along with the Generate with AI button.

• Click Generate with AI to initiate a new summarization attempt.
• If the attempt fails again, the same error and retry interface displays.
• No partial or incomplete summary is stored. The asset version remains in the "no summary" state until a successful generation occurs.

Summary behavior across asset versions

Summaries are tied to asset versions. Each version has its own independent summary.

• When you view an asset, you only see the summary associated with the current version.
• When a new version of an asset is uploaded, the new version starts with no summary. If you have the required permission, the Summarize with AI button displays for the new version.
• The previous version's summary is not carried forward to the new version.
• If you revert the asset to a prior version, the summary for that prior version is visible again (if one was generated for it).
• There is no way to regenerate, overwrite, or delete a summary once it has been created for a given version. If the content of a document changes, a new version must be uploaded to trigger a new summary.
