Can I search images by color?

Yes! Acquia DAM has automated color detection for images during upload. All new DAM customers have this feature enabled on their sites, and we’ll be adding it to existing customer sites throughout this year and into 2025.

When users of DAM search for assets, they can refine their results using the color filter. This feature is only available in redesigned search, not classic search.

Once you select a color, the search results will update to show images that contain that color as one of the top eight colors that appears in the image, which is determined by an algorithm.

The color filter is a swatch with a default set of colors, each representing a color family. They are:

  • Red
  • Orange
  • Yellow
  • Lime green
  • Green
  • Shamrock
  • Cyan
  • Light blue
  • Dark blue
  • Purple
  • Light purple
  • Pink
  • Brown
  • Black
  • Gray
  • White

Color families include colors within a 20 degree hue range from the default color, and there’s some overlap between them. For example, yellow has a very small hue range, so it tends to overlap with some shades of orange and green.

To filter results to a more specific color, you can enter a HEX code into the field under the swatch. Again, the results will show images that contain a color within a 20 degree hue range from the HEX code.

Turn off color filter

By default, the color filter is turned on for sites. Admins can turn it off by going to the Admin app, then clicking Search Settings and Refine search. Click the green circle and the filter will be disabled.
