Connect Acquia DAM to AI assistants such as Claude or Microsoft Copilot through the Model Context Protocol (MCP) server. Use conversational prompts to search assets, retrieve metadata, update content, and streamline workflows.
Supported AI assistants
The Acquia DAM MCP server works with AI assistants and clients that support the MCP standard and OAuth authentication, including:
Claude (Claude Desktop, Claude.ai, and Claude Enterprise)
Microsoft Copilot (including Microsoft Copilot Studio)
Any MCP-compliant client or development platform that supports remote MCP servers with OAuth authentication
Enabling the MCP server
Administrators can enable the MCP server through the Admin menu.
To connect your AI assistant to Acquia DAM, configure the MCP connection with the following settings:
Setting
Value
MCP Server URL
Your DAM URL with /mcp appended. For example, https://<yourdomain>.acquiadam.com/mcp.
Authentication type
OAuth.
For instructions to connect custom remote MCP servers, refer to the documentation for your AI assistant.
Usage and permissions
After you establish a connection, your AI assistant can search, retrieve, and update content in Acquia DAM.
Each user authenticates through OAuth. The assets and content available to the user match their existing Acquia DAM permissions and role-based access controls. The same access rules apply to the web interface, the REST API, and AI assistants.
Available tools
The MCP server provides the following tools:
Tool
Description
Search assets
Searches your DAM. Results include only assets that you have permission to access.
Returns all asset metadata fields in your DAM and their allowed values.
Update metadata
Updates one or more metadata field values on an asset.
Update security
Updates the release date, expiration date, or asset groups of an asset.
Rename asset
Changes the filename of an asset.
Manage tags
Adds or removes tags on an asset.
Get embed URL

Use cases and starter prompts
Use the following prompts to get started. The prompts are grouped by role.

"Crop this image to 16:9 and let the assistant find the best focal point in the shot."
Reversing changes made with an AI assistant
When you make changes through an AI assistant, reverting those changes depends on whether the assistant retains the previous values in context.
The Acquia DAM API returns current field values, not the edit history. To ensure that you can revert updates, use the following methods:
Use search context: If your initial prompt included the previous value, the assistant retains that value in context and can revert the update when you ask. For example, prompt "Find all assets where Photographer = X", and then prompt "Change Photographer to Y".
Request a snapshot first: If the previous value was not in your search query, capture a snapshot before you make updates:
Capture the current values. Prompt: "Show me a table of the asset filenames and their current values for Photographer."
Make the update. Prompt: "Update the Photographer field to 'Jane Doe'."
To revert the update, prompt: "Revert the Photographer field to the previous values in the table."
Manage tags safely: New tags append to the asset and do not overwrite existing tags. The assistant can remove the new tags without affecting existing tags.
