What are best practices for file types?

These are guidelines to help ensure the assets on your Acquia DAM site are most useful to anyone who uses the site. As a best practice, we recommend that you upload the highest resolution file format to Acquia DAM. Assets will automatically be converted to the formats you choose when you download or share them.

Because the DAM converts many of these file types to suit user requirements, we recommend following the information below for these general file types.

Images

Upload the highest size and resolution image you will need. The DAM can reduce the image size and quality, but cannot increase it.

For general use, use common formats such as JPG or TIFF.

For more specialized formats, such as PSD, ensure all resources used by the document are embedded or contained within the document.

GIF, PNG, and other formats may have various limitations. Be aware of those to ensure your use of those assets is appropriate.

Videos

Upload the size and resolution you will need. The DAM can reduce the video size or quality, but cannot increase it.

For general use, use common formats such as MP4 or MOV which are easily viewed on all platforms.

PDFs and Office documents

Ensure all resources, such as fonts, are contained within the file.

Previews are automatically created for most supported file types, but full-length previews aren't automatically created for PowerPoint and PDF files over 250 MB in size.

We recommend not uploading unsupported file types. While the DAM will generally treat these as a binary format, it can also misidentify them and cause conversion errors for those assets.
