Google Tag Manager, or GTM, is a tool to manage market and measurement tags in a single location. When you connect your GTM container to your site, it loads on your live site. This integration enables you to manage all tags inside GTM without the need to add code directly to your site.

This document provides instructions about how to connect, configure, and manage the Google Tag Manager integration on your site.

Capabilities of GTM

With GTM, you can manage and deploy the following types of tags through a single container:

• Google Analytics: Add your Google Analytics 4, or GA4, tag inside GTM. The tag loads with your container, and you do not need to add Google Analytics separately to your site.
• Tags to advertise and remarket: Deploy tags for platforms such as Google Ads and Meta Pixel, previously known as Facebook Pixel.
• Tools for consent and cookie banners: Use tools such as OneTrust to manage user consent and cookies.
• Other market tags: Any tag you manage in GTM loads through this integration.

Prerequisites and considerations

Before you connect GTM, ensure that you meet the following requirements and understand the system behavior:

• GTM Container ID: Locate your GTM Container ID in your GTM workspace. The ID has the format GTM-XXXXXXX and displays at the top of the workspace.
• Remove existing GTM code: If a GTM code snippet was previously added to the HTML Snippets page in the site admin area, delete it. If you load the same container in two places, the analytics data is counted two times.
• Required permission: An account requires the administer site settings permission to read or change GTM settings. Site administrators have this permission. If the configuration page is unavailable, contact a site administrator. For more information, visit Managing roles and permissions.
• Live site only: Tags load only on a public website. They do not load while you edit or preview pages. This keeps your analytics clean and prevents internal activity that can misrepresent your data.
• Google Analytics configuration: To add or modify your Google Analytics tag, update the tag inside GTM. No additional configuration is necessary on your site.

Managing GTM integration

The integration provides options to connect, configure page rules, or disconnect the container.

Connecting GTM

To connect your GTM container to your site:

1. Log in to Source CMS to open the Sites Dashboard.
2. Locate the site that you want to access.
3. Click Edit Site.
4. On the left navigation menu, click Configuration.
5. Select Search and metadata and select Google Analytics.
6. In the Google Tag Manager Container ID field, enter your GTM Container ID. For example, GTM-XXXXXXX. 
   Note

   Find the ID in Google Tag Manager at the top of the workspace, or access Admin > Container Settings.

7. In Where should tracking load?, select one of the following options to restrict data collection to specific pages:
   • Only on the paths listed below: The container loads only on the specified paths. 
   • On all paths except those listed below: The container loads on all pages except the specified paths.

Disconnect GTM

To stop the load process of a GTM container on a site:

1. Log in to Source CMS to open the Sites Dashboard.
2. Locate the site that you want to access.
3. Click Edit Site.
4. On the left navigation menu, click Configuration.
5. Select Search and metadata and select Google Analytics.

6. Click Disconnect. 

   Data collection stops immediately. 

   To reconnect at any time, enter a Google Tag Manager Container ID again.
