How do I use AI to add alt text to Acquia DAM images?

Use the Acquia DAM integration with OpenAI’s ChatGPT to auto-generate accessible and searchable alternative text descriptions for DAM images.

With this AI integration, you will:

  • Optimize images for search in the DAM.

  • Save time for those writing image alt text on websites.

  • Minimize human error.

How it works

Generative AI tools like ChatGPT use large, multimodal language models based on a broad range of data captured from the internet to respond to questions in a conversational way.

This native integration uses ChatGPT to create alt text descriptions automatically for DAM assets. Only image files are supported right now.

The integration looks for new or newly versioned images in the DAM, then sends the images to
ChatGPT with vision mode enabled. Alternative descriptions are sent back to the DAM and placed in assets' alt text metadata field.

It’s important to know that we can’t control the output of ChatGPT. We recommend that DAM admins periodically review the auto-generated alt text.

Set up the integration

Step 1. Request the OpenAI integration by contacting your Acquia account rep. You provide your own OpenAI key to use for this integration, so plan for the cost of ChatGPT based on the volume of descriptions that will be created.

Step 2. Create a metadata field for the alt text description, if you don’t already have one.

Step 3. Fill out the requirements document the Acquia team sends you, which includes a maximum word length for the alt text descriptions.

Test it's working

Once your integration is set up, test that the auto-generated alt text is working correctly.

  1. On the DAM dashboard, click Upload

  2. Follow the typical steps to upload a file to the DAM.

  3. Wait five to six minutes for the alt text to be generated by the integration.

  4. Click the asset filename on the Review and Edit page.

  5. On the Asset Details page, the OpenAI Alt Text (AI Generated) field will be filled in.

You’ll also see these fields in Asset Digest.
