Managing Drupal Canvas page translations

This page details the workflow to handle multilingual content directly in the Drupal Canvas editor. Content authors must use the language selector to create, preview, modify, and remove page translations.

Creating a translation for a Drupal Canvas page

Prerequisites

• Users must possess the Create translations permission to create new translations.

  For more information, visit Managing roles and permissions.

• You must configure at least one additional language for the site. The system displays the language selector only after you add an additional language.
• The page must be published in the default language.

To create a translation for a Drupal Canvas page:

1. Access your site.
2. On the top right, click Edit to open Drupal Canvas.
3. In the top right corner, click the language selector to choose the target language.
4. Click the kebab menu icon for the language to add a translation. 

5. Select Add translation.

   The system displays the translation page with the original text next to the corresponding fields to enter the translated text.

6. Enter the translated text in the corresponding fields.

   Note

   Users cannot publish a translation until they complete all required translation fields.

7. Click Save as draft to save the translation without publishing, or click Publish Translation to publish the translation.

After a successful publish, the following occurs:

• The system redirects the user to the Drupal Canvas editor.
• Users can select a language to preview the translated version.
• A check mark displays next to the language name in the language selector to indicate that a translation exists.
• The label (Default) identifies the default language next to the language name.
• After a translation is created, the kebab menu icon for that language provides options to Edit translation and Delete translation.

Previewing a Drupal Canvas page translation

All users can view translated pages from the language selector without the Create Translation, Edit Translation, or Delete Translation permissions.

To preview how a translated page looks:

1. Access your site.
2. On the top right, click Edit to open Drupal Canvas.
3. Locate the language selector at the top-right corner of the page.
4. Select the language translation that you want to preview.

The page renders in Preview mode to show the translated content. 

Preview mode follows these behaviors:

• The preview shows the translated version exactly as it appears to site visitors.
• The system displays the layout in read-only mode so that users cannot drag, drop, or edit components.
• All component editing tools remain disabled during non-default language previews.
• If a component does not have a translation, the system falls back to the source or default language content.

Editing a translation for a Drupal Canvas page

Prerequisites

• Users must possess the Edit translations permission to edit existing translations. For more information, visit Managing roles and permissions.

To edit an existing translation for a Drupal Canvas page:

1. Access your site.
2. On the top right, click Edit to open Drupal Canvas.
3. Locate the language selector at the top-right of the page.
4. Click the kebab menu icon for the language to edit.

5. Select Edit translation.

   The system displays the translation page with the existing translated content in a read-only format. Review the status message to verify that the translation is accepted.

6. Click the Click here to update link to enable editing.

   The system displays the translation page with the original text next to the corresponding fields to edit the translated text.

7. Update the translated content as required.
8. Click Save as draft to save changes without publishing, or click Publish translation to publish the updated translation.

After the system saves or publishes the translation successfully, the following occurs:

• The system redirects the user to the Drupal Canvas page editor.
• The translated content updates with the latest changes.
• The language selector continues to display a check mark next to the language name to indicate that a translation exists.

Deleting a translation for a Drupal Canvas page

Prerequisites

• Users must possess the Delete translations permission to delete existing translations. For more information, visit Managing roles and permissions.

When deleting a translation from a page, users must adhere to the following rules:

• Users cannot delete the default language.
• Deletion of a translation removes only that language version. The source page and other translations remain intact.

To delete an existing translation for a Drupal Canvas page:

1. Access your site.
2. On the top right, click Edit to open Drupal Canvas.
3. Locate the language selector at the top-right corner of the page.
4. Click the kebab menu icon for the language to delete.

5. Select Delete translation.

   The system displays the Delete Translation confirmation dialog box.

6. Enter DELETE in the field and click Delete Translation to permanently delete the translation.

After the system deletes the translation successfully, the following occurs:

• The system redirects the user to the Drupal Canvas page editor.
• The translation for the selected language is removed.
• The check mark no longer displays next to the language name in the language selector to indicate that the translation no longer exists.
• The kebab menu icon for that language displays the Add translation option to enable users to create a new translation.

Enter the translated text in the corresponding fields.
