Why does my Excel export look strange?
Date Published: October 14, 2026
Issue:
My export replaced special letters with symbols such as commas. This caused some of the data to land in the wrong column.
Solution:
Web Governance Excel exports are created in a format that allows special characters, but this must be selected at the time of import.
- Export the file per the instructions in How to do an export.
- Open Excel and click File > Import.
-
In the Import dialog box, select CSV file and click Import.
Browse to the file that you downloaded to your local machine, select it, and click Get Data.
The system displays the Import Wizard dialog box.
- Select:
- Delimiters: Select semicolon or commas based on the data separator in the document.
- File Origin: Select UTF-8 to ensure that special letters appear normally and data is placed in the correct column in the Excel sheet.
- Click Finish.
- Choose the existing sheet.
- Click Import.
Notes
- If you do not have Excel, you can also convert the data with Google Sheets.
- Exports do not include ignored or handled issues.
