When you want to ensure your product data model has all the necessary information to market and sell your products, and make sure that it’s in sync with your enterprise resource planning and product lifecycle management systems, you’ll want to configure attributes and product types in Entries. If you have the Administrate Entries application permission, you can set those up from the More dropdown.
Attributes¶
Attributes describe a product, much like metadata describes an asset. Up to 1,000 attributes can be created in Entries.
All existing attributes are listed on the Attributes page, along with their attribute type and group. They’re also listed on the Products page by attribute group. Additional attributes and groups of attributes can be added from the Attributes page.
Click Add attributes to create a new attribute, then enter an attribute name, select an attribute type, and add the attribute to any existing groups. Note that you can edit name and group after creating the attribute, but not type.
Learn more about attributes in the Set up Product Types and Attributes video in Acquia Academy.
Attribute types¶
Attribute types can be any of the following:
- Single line text boxes (with a maximum text length of 255 characters)
- Formatted rich text (with a maximum character length of 65,535 characters)
- Single-select or multi-select dropdown lists
- Assets with one or more assets from the Assets app selected
Attribute groups¶
Attribute groups allow you to visually organize attributes - like those for manufacturing specifications, marketing information, sales information, or status - of a similar purpose into a group. Attribute groups cannot be exported from or imported to Entries.
On the Attributes page, you can group similar attributes together in one group and assign the group to product types. To create an attribute group, click Add group, then enter a group name.
Edit attributes¶
If you need to update any attribute details, click an attribute’s name on the Attributes page. Click the pencil icon next to the attribute to make changes. The name and attribute group can be changed on the Attribute details tab. You cannot edit the type.
Import only attributes¶
For all except the asset attribute, an Import only flag can be enabled or disabled when you’re editing attribute details. Import only values are typically imported via a CSV from an enterprise resource planning or product lifecycle management system and represent things like manufacturing specifications that shouldn’t be changed. If enabled, it prevents users from modifying those specifications.
Add attribute values¶
For single- and multi-select attributes, a Values tab displays when you’re making edits to those attributes. See all the existing values for the attribute and add more attributes from the Values tab.
Click Add value to add more attribute values in the multi-line text area. To add multiple values, enter one value per line. An attribute can have up to 200 values. Each value can be up to 128 characters in length.
Delete attributes¶
If you no longer need an attribute, it can be deleted by selecting the attribute’s name on the Attributes list, then clicking Delete attribute. Deleting an attribute removes it, along with any associated values, from products to which it was assigned.
