In today's world, users who create and license digital assets may be unaware of how their assets are being used online. To help with this, we offer an integration with Digimarc, a pioneer in the automatic identification of everyday objects like digital images. If you enable the Digimarc Watermarking feature in Acquia DAM (Widen), an imperceptible digital watermark is automatically applied when files are uploaded to the DAM and to most conversion formats when assets are downloaded from the DAM and from the mobile app. The watermark  stays with assets as they're manipulated, copied, or transformed from one file format to another, allowing you to more easily track and verify assets as they appear online.

Every image enhanced with Digimarc's offering - known as Digimarc Barcode for Digital Images -  includes in its payload a client ID that is assigned to each Digimarc customer upon subscribing.

Digimarc IDs can be applied to file formats such as BMPs, JPGs, PNGs, PSDs, and TIFs. Contact the DAM Customer Support team to confirm other file formats.

Digimarc IDs can also be applied to share links and embed codes. Contact the Support team for help setting that up. When they're added to share links or embed codes, you may see a slight delay when viewing the link or embed code for the first time.

View Digimarc-enhanced images in Photoshop

You can link to and view Digimarc images in Photoshop by downloading the free Digimarc Barcode for Digital Images plugin from Adobe Exchange.

Once downloaded, drag and drop the contents of the folder into the following path on your hard drive: 

• Mac: Macintosh HD\Applications\Adobe Photoshop CC\Plug-ins\
• PC: C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CC\Plug-ins

Limitations

Digimarc’s enhancement process uses color space (a specific organization of colors) within an image’s pixels to apply its payload. Some image types contain no color space, so must be converted prior to applying a watermark. Those image types include vector or line art, palettized images, and true black and white. In addition, assets must be greater than 300 px in size in order to be enhanced with Digimarc IDs.

In addition, Digimarc IDs cannot be applied to:

• Original formats
• Video assets
• Files with transparency, like PNGs
• Assets downloaded to file sharing tools, from collection share pages, and from portals

By default, if a Digimarc ID cannot be applied to an asset format, you'll receive an error message when downloading the asset. As the DAM admin, you can request this be changed to always allow the asset to be downloaded even if it's not enhanced by contacting the Support team. There are, however, security implications with that method.
