How are videos managed?

You can upload, manage, publish, and archive videos in the Acquia DAM (Widen), much the same way you do with images.

Upload videos

Virtually any video format can be uploaded to the DAM. Just like images, the DAM stores and manages the highest resolution of videos and converts them to other formats on the fly, automatically, when needed. You don't need to manage anything, other than uploading the high-quality master video.

The list of formats you can upload is long and constantly being expanded. Refer to the Acquia DAM Supported File Types for a list of supported and unsupported file types.

Any embedded XMP metadata for videos will be mapped to the assets in your site, and a full-length preview will be automatically generated for viewers to see videos.

Download and share videos

Videos can be downloaded or shared from your site and from mobile devices. Choose to download videos in a number of different formats. The DAM creates the requested format(s) on the fly from the high-res upload.

With permission, you can create video clips to download or share.

Share videos using a share link or select an embed code to embed videos into websites.

Play videos

Videos automatically play in HD using the HLS player. They'll play at the highest resolution available based on your bandwidth, but you can select a lower resolution if you need to.

You can adjust HTML text so videos automatically play or so they automatically size based on the device being used when they're opened. Refer to the "How do I create share links and embed codes?" article for details on how to modify the HTML.

Add closed captioning

After videos are uploaded, add a DFXP, SRT, or VTT file in the language of your choice to the video in the Captions area on the Asset Details page, and when videos are previewed or shared, the captions will display.

Check out the "How do I add closed captioning to videos?" article to learn more.

If your videos are blurry in the beginning

Our video technology uses HTTP Live Streaming (HLS), which is a common video streaming feature that all major video providers use in one way or another. It works by providing a lower video bitrate (lower possible quality) while the available data stream is established for your web browser. Videos start at a lower bitrate and then improve based on the data stream available, so videos the video will always play and there should be no buffering.

If the available data stream reduces or improves during playback, the bitrate (and perceived quality) will also adjust up to the maximum available HD stream provided by the HLS service. The value provided by HLS is that available videos - even lower-quality videos - is better for viewers than an unavailable video that needs to buffer with other technologies.

See Insights

Track views of videos from your site using the Insights app. Create reports to analyze views by month or other timeframes, how they are viewed, which are viewed most, and the site they are embedded in. Insights reports can display views of videos, including views of videos in portals. Note that Views and Plays are different metrics. Views of videos are recorded as asset events, while Plays are video-specific events.

Create an Insights report to see video views by month, date, or year, and utilize the Group by feature to categorize data effectively.
